There are many forms a surrogacy process can take:
• gestational or traditional;
• independent or agency-supported;
• commercial or altruistic;
• domestic or international.
Independent surrogacy, sometimes also called private surrogacy, is any surrogacy arrangement in which the prospective parents and surrogate do not work with a surrogacy agency as intermediary.
Altruistic surrogacy refers to a specific surrogacy arrangement in which the surrogate volunteers to carry a pregnancy to term without receiving any compensation, and she is only reimbursed for all the pregnancy-related expenses. This is the case of surrogacy in Canada.
The main difference between gestational and traditional surrogacy is that a traditional surrogate carries a baby who is biologically related to her because her eggs are used to conceive the baby. While a gestational carrier has no biological link to the baby and has an embryo implanted.
